Whenever India’s oil dependence is discussed, the spotlight is usually on crude oil. However, another imported commodity quietly enters almost every Indian household every day — edible oil. From roadside food stalls and restaurants to packaged foods and home kitchens, edible oil has become an essential part of India’s food economy. Yet, a series of global events over the past three years has exposed how vulnerable India’s edible oil sector truly is.

The first major disruption came in February 2022, when Russia launched its full-scale invasion of Ukraine, severely affecting global sunflower oil supplies from the two countries. Within weeks, sunflower oil prices surged and imports became costlier for India. Just two months later, Indonesia — one of the world’s largest palm oil exporters — imposed a temporary export ban to secure domestic supplies, triggering another sharp rise in edible oil prices because India relies heavily on Indonesian palm oil imports. More recently, tensions in the Middle East and concerns over the Strait of Hormuz — a critical global shipping route — have raised fears of supply disruptions and higher freight costs.

These events have highlighted a harsh reality: India’s kitchens remain highly dependent on global supply chains, export policies and geopolitical stability. India currently imports nearly 60% of its edible oil requirement, making it one of the world’s largest edible oil markets after countries such as the United States, China and Brazil. The country’s edible oil import bill is estimated at around USD 18.3 billion, or nearly ₹1.61 lakh crore, for 2024–25.
