Suvendu Adhikari – Land Transfer To BSF In West Bengal – Securing The Porous Border
The transfer of land to the Border Security Force in West Bengal is being viewed as an important step toward enhancing security along India’s border with Bangladesh. Stretching over 2,200 kilometers, the West Bengal–Bangladesh border is one of the longest and most challenging international borders in the country, with several riverine stretches, densely populated areas and unfenced sections that make surveillance difficult. Security agencies have long expressed concerns about illegal cross-border movement, smuggling, human trafficking and infiltration through vulnerable stretches of the border.
The allocation of additional land is expected to help the BSF strengthen its operational infrastructure by constructing border outposts, patrol roads, observation facilities and other security installations. Officials believe that improved infrastructure will enhance monitoring capabilities and enable faster response to security threats. The move comes amid continued efforts by the Centre to modernize border management and improve coordination between security agencies to safeguard national security while facilitating legitimate cross-border trade and movement.
