EC’s social media code of ethics faces criticism
The election commission’s ‘voluntary code of ethics‘ for social media faced criticism when East Delhi DEO K. Mahesh pointed out flaws in it during a panel discussion in New Delhi. The code was criticised majorly on the grounds of being applicable for a period of 48 hours before the elections, involving a long and delayed procedure for deletion of offensive content and the lack of measures by authorities to prevent misuse. After witnessing the social media use in the 2014 elections, adequate steps must have been taken to avoid a repeat of the past.
