Trinamool Congress MP Nusrat Jahan was criticised for wearing a saree with sindoor and mangalsutra to the Lok Sabha for her swearing-in ceremony. A fatwa was issued against her by Muslim clerics for marrying Nikhil Jain, a non-Muslim and her attire was termed ‘unislamic’. She expressed her view on the matter by tweeting where she said that her faith was much stronger and went beyond what she chose to wear. Interreligious marriages are permitted by law and it is only women who are questioned about their choices. Muslim men who marry non-Muslim women are not questioned the same way.
