GOVT FOILS UK COMPANY’S BID TO PATENT USE OF TURMERIC, PINE BARK & TEA FOR TREATING HAIR LOSS
Western companies who want others to comply with IPR (Intellectual Property Rights) don’t seem to hesitate to make their own traditional and ayurvedic methods and cures. India once again has been successful in protecting its traditional knowledge by preventing an attempt made by Europe’s Leading Dermaceutical Laboratory-Pangaea Laboratories Limited, to take patent on a medicinal composition containing turmeric, pine bark and green tea for treating hair loss. Recently, a unit of CSIR, an Indian Govt unit foiled Colgate-Palmolive Company’s attempt to patent a mouthwash formula containing herb (Nutmeg- Jayaphal) extract used in Indian traditional systems of medicine to cure oral diseases, at European Patent office. Till date CSIR has succeeded with hundreds of such cases – and it is good to know that they are on the lookout for many more.
