INDIAN RAILWAYS COOLIES TO BE RENAMED SAHAYAKS
As we all know about the red-shirted “Coolies” who provide a critical service at railway stations. The term itself has a tinge of negative to it. Now with the Railway budget, they will be renamed “Sahayaks” or helpers, be given new uniforms, be asked to learn “soft skills” for dealing with passengers, and to ease the hardship of carrying heavy suitcases – often balanced on their heads – more trolleys for porters will be made available. The goal is to lift the status of porters and improving their working conditions, said railways minister, Suresh Prabhu.
