The West Bengal assembly passed an anti-lynching bill following an increase in the number of lynching cases in the state. Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee said that lynching was a serious crime that had to be addressed at the earliest. The Congress and the CPI(M) supported the bill while the BJP remained silent in order to avoid political conflict. Mamata Banerjee requested the people to report any grievances they may have instead of indulging in activities like mob lynching and taking the law into their own hands.
