The celebration of Tipu Jayanthi has been cancelled by the newly formed BJP government led by BS Yediyurappa in Karnataka. An order has been issued to the Kannada and Culture Department asking them to discontinue the practice. Yediyurappa said that Tipu Sultan was a tyrant and his birth must not be celebrated while this was opposed by the Congress stating that the BJP was not being secular. The conflict regarding the celebration of Tipu Jayanthi has been around for a long time with the BJP viewing Tipu as being anti Hindu and Christian while Congress sees him as a Freedom Fighter.
