Congress Spokesperson RS Surjewala said that the party would not be appointing or claiming the position of the Leader of the Opposition due to insufficient numbers. The Congress Spokesperson said that the party had only 52 seats and not 54 which is 10% of the 545 seats required to be the Leader of Opposition. He also added that the opposition parties had not decided on a leading party and that the decision was left to the government whether to assign a specific party as the principal opposition party. The fact that Congress does not even have enough seats to be the Leader of Opposition reflects the strong ‘NO’ that the people have said to them while highlighting the equally strong ‘YES’ given to the BJP.
