The Government seeks access to the origin of message forwards on WhatsApp in order to track down false information and messages spreading violence. With the upcoming elections, it is all the more imperative for the Government to trace the sources of information that misguide the masses. WhatsApp has however opposed the guidelines proposed by the Government as it feels that the guidelines are against its privacy protection and encryption features promised to its users. A consensus has to be arrived at based on the relative importance of the two stands. Freedom of Speech and Privacy of the User stands as a barrier to curbing misinformation. WhatsApp has however taken a crucial step wherein those who access it via third-party apps may get locked out of the application.
