Disrespecting Shankaracharya? Who Taught These Lessons To Children?
A Harikatha performance by a group of girls at the Rajangana of Udupi Sri Krishna Mutt has triggered controversy after videos circulated online alleging that the narration contained disrespectful remarks about Jagadguru Adi Shankaracharya while recounting the life and philosophy of Sri Madhvacharya. The remarks drew objections from followers of the Advaita tradition and several Hindu organisations, who demanded an apology from the performers.
Following the controversy, the performers issued a public video apology, stating that there was no intention to insult Adi Shankaracharya or hurt anyone’s religious sentiments. They said the narration was based on material from a book and clarified that neither Udupi Sri Krishna Mutt nor the Paryaya Shiroor Math had directed or approved the disputed content.
The Paryaya Shiroor Math also expressed regret over the incident, saying it had granted permission only for the cultural programme and was unaware of the objectionable remarks. The Math directed the organisers to issue a public apology and distanced itself from the statements made during the performance, while appealing for harmony and respect among different Hindu philosophical traditions.
