Dutee Chand stays strong despite criticism on her same-sex relationship
Indian professional sprinter Dutee Chand came out recently about having a same-sex relationship with a girl from her village. Being the first sportsperson from India to admit and embrace her sexuality, Dutee Chand faced opposition from her family and several members of the conservative Indian society. Dutee’s mother objected to the relationship saying that the girl was like a daughter to Dutee and that it was unacceptable. Dutee Chand, however, said that the Supreme Court decision to decriminalize section 377 made her feel empowered and that she would not bow down to family pressure.
