A Panel discussion in New Delhi on Thursday addressed the issue of paid news being published on social media. Paid news can be biased and misleading which is a cause for concern especially given that many young voters rely on social media information to make decisions. IAS Officer and District Election Officer (East), K Mahesh condemned the misuse of social media to spread news that is not objective. Paid news is not only biased but it may also be offensive to opposition parties. As much as social media is an effective tool for mass communication, it may turn into a reservoir of incorrect news if not regulated.
