How Harij’s ‘Jhapatpara’ became ‘Islampura’?
Concerns have been raised over the reported renaming of a decades-old locality in Harij, located in Gujarat’s Patan district. The area in Ward No. 4, traditionally known as Jhapatpara, is now allegedly being referred to as “Islampura” in certain official government records, according to local residents. The issue has prompted Hindu organisations to submit a memorandum to the Mamlatdar, seeking an inquiry and appropriate action.
During a visit to the locality, residents told OpIndia that the name “Islampura” became more commonly used over the years as the area’s demographic composition changed with an increase in the Muslim population. They alleged that the new name was gradually adopted in official records as well.
The development has sparked demands from local Hindu residents for the restoration of the original name and a review of the records. Hindu organisations have also called for an official investigation into how and when the alleged name change was incorporated into government documents.
