The proposed Assam Uniform Civil Code (UCC) 2026 Bill, introduced by the BJP-led government under Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma, seeks to establish a common civil legal framework for all residents of Assam, irrespective of religion, while exempting Scheduled Tribes from its ambit. The Bill aims to replace religion-based personal laws governing marriage, divorce, inheritance, succession and live-in relationships with a uniform set of rules.
