The Madhya Pradesh government has approved the draft Uniform Civil Code (UCC) Bill during a special cabinet meeting held in Jagdishpur near Bhopal. The draft was prepared by a six-member committee and is expected to be introduced in the state legislative assembly during the five-day monsoon session beginning Monday.

The proposed law will not apply to Scheduled Tribes (STs) or Particularly Vulnerable Tribal Groups (PVTGs) living in protected areas. The state government said this exemption is intended to preserve their unique cultural heritage and traditional way of life.

According to the government, the UCC Bill aims to ensure equal rights for women and children in matters related to marriage, divorce, inheritance, succession, and live-in relationships across all communities. The bill also proposes to prohibit practices such as polygamy, triple talaq, and nikah-halala. Chief Minister Dr. Mohan Yadav said the legislation seeks to protect women’s dignity, promote equality, strengthen social harmony, and foster national unity by eliminating discriminatory practices.
