Norway Cartoon Row Sparks Outrage as ‘Snake Charmer’ Depiction of PM Modi
A cartoon published by Norwegian newspaper Aftenposten during Prime Minister Narendra Modi’s visit to Oslo has triggered widespread criticism online, with many Indians accusing the publication of promoting racist stereotypes. The illustration, published alongside an opinion article, depicted Modi as a snake charmer using a fuel-station pipe as a snake. The cartoon quickly went viral on social media shortly before Modi arrived in Norway for the Nordic summit.
Critics argued that the image reflected outdated colonial-era portrayals of India as a land of mysticism, elephants and snake charmers. Many social media users said the depiction crossed the line from political satire into xenophobic stereotyping.
