MP  Asaduddin Owaisi expressed his dissatisfaction and disagreement with the Triple Talaq Bill and said that the passing of the bill was not really beneficial to women. Owaisi said that the bill was unconstitutional because the Muslim men who are violators will be punished for 3 years while non- Muslims will only be punished for a year for a similar offence. The Triple Talaq Bill is supported by many Muslim women and they feel it gives them a sense of control and their husbands a sense of responsibility towards their wives.  Owaisi said that the offenders would be in jail and they cannot provide for their wives thereby making is not beneficial to women. However, the law is, in fact, empowering to a woman whose husband leaves her without a proper and legal divorce which will enable her to demand maintenance. It is also to be noted that even if the punishment period for Muslim men is reduced to 1 year, Owaisi and the Opposition would continue to criticise it.
