Two junior intern doctors in Kolkata faced a mob which attacked them violently after claiming that the death of a 75-year-old man was due to medical negligence. The mob consists of the relatives and family of the deceased patient. The NRS Hospital claimed that around 200 people attacked the hospital and the intern doctors. One of the intern doctors was injured severely when a brick was hurled at his head thereby resulting in a skull fracture. Protests erupted across several hospitals where junior doctors refused to function. They are shutting gates and holding placards in support of the doctors who were attacked. It is understandable that the doctors are upset by the way their peers were treated and their medical knowledge was questioned. The mob was irrational in attacking the doctors. It is ironic that there is no system in place to protect those who work day and night in order to save crucial lives. BJP leader Mukul Roy has blamed the Trinamool Congress workers for the attack on the doctors.
