The UP government led by Yogi Adityanath was issuing Scheduled Caste Certificates to 17 castes who presently belong to the OBC category. This move was opposed by Union Minister for Social Justice and Empowerment Tawar Chand Gehlot said that it was not appropriate as it was not being done following the guidelines in the constitution. Gehlot said that though the idea was not favoured by the Centre, it would be considered if a formal appeal was made citing suitable reasons. Mayawati has also opposed the move saying that these castes will eventually be stuck in no man’s land and will not be able to avail benefits given to SC’s or OBC’s. Caste politics in India has only been growing and despite laws for equality of laws and abolition of the caste system, its practice is still highly prevalent.
