What Was the ‘Bhaipo Tax’ in Bengal? How Suvendu Adhikari Put An End To It

For years, truck drivers transporting goods into West Bengal from neighboring states complained about what was popularly known as the “Bhaipo Tax”. The term “Bhaipo” — meaning nephew in Bengali — was frequently used by opposition parties to refer to Trinamool Congress MP Abhishek Banerjee, nephew of former Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee.

According to transport operators and drivers, unofficial toll collections, roadside extortion, bamboo barricades and illegal checkpoints became a common occurrence on highways leading into Bengal during the TMC government’s tenure. Truckers travelling through the Jharkhand–West Bengal border routes alleged that several unauthorized “nakas” operated along the highways, where commercial vehicles were allegedly forced to pay money.

Drivers claimed that refusal to comply often resulted in intimidation, threats, punctured tires and even damage to their vehicles. The delays reportedly caused significant financial losses, particularly for transporters carrying perishable goods such as vegetables, fish and fruits.
