Just like the multistory glass and steel skyscraper office and apartment buildings are a sign of prosperity, Mumbai slums also are building multistory huts using bricks, steel rods and even wood. In Kherwadi, one Mumbai slum, 100,000 one-time single story huts have become four stories tall – all due to influx of migrants and the soaring land prices. Those living on the upper floors of these slum huts can go up and down only by climbing narrow iron ladders located on the outside wall of these structures.
