Double crisis in Assam with NRC and flash floods
The citizens of Assam are going through a rough patch wherein they are battling to prove their citizenship while braving the flash floods. Recently the Foreign Tribunals set up by the Assam government declared that 1.7 lakh people as foreigners and not the citizens of the State. Natives who have been residents in the state for decades are being left out of the NRC and disputes also arise if the Assamese are married to outsiders. The significance of the NRC and desperation to be recognized as citizens of the state has added to the people’s woes. A citizen trapped in the flood recently said that despite losing his house, it was sign of relief that his NRC documents were safe with him.
