Anupam Kher notes that when he was invited to debate at the Mumbai Lit Fest, he was booed by the audience when he started speaking. Also, the organizers deliberately chose a BBC moderator for my session, who did not understand Hindi. So Kher notes that my freedom and efficacy of expression was inhibited by that one choice, and in addition to the booing audience. “So freedoms can be snatched insidious and invisible ways. I have dealt with it many times, and will do so again and again and again in small and big ways. That’s life. It is not any more difficult today than in the past. And while it changes in many ways, some struggles remain perennial.”
