Jayalalitha, fondly called Amma, the chief minister of Tamil Nadu had more than 18 welfare schemes that are free or heavily subsidized. Some of these include – the cradle baby scheme (to prevent female foeticide in the early 1990s), gold for marriage scheme, Amma canteens where food is available for Re. 1/-, Amma bottled water, Amma drinking water, Amma laptops, Amma baby care, Amma grinder, mixie and fan, Amma mobile, Amma pharmacy, Amma micro-loans, and several more – many of which were popular.
