Diwali came early to New York’s Times Square, its most famous landmark when it celebrated the biggest ever Diwali festival outside of India. Since its inception several years ago, it has been growing in size. One reason that took added significance to host and celebrate this years function was the fact that – after the 2016 presidential elections, USA is deeply divided in the middle.
As one artist put it – the Deepavali, the festival of lights should help “spread a little bit of love and happiness” when there is so much hatred and division. Well said and it certainly will as all Indian know! Diwali is celebrated to bring wealth and love to the world!

USA issued an presidential executive order to dramatically alter the H1-B Visa programme, of which Indians were the biggest beneficiaries taking up more than 85% of the visa slots. Overtime, Indians added family members and then went on to become citizens and settle down in USA where they now comprise over 30 lakhs. While the executive order hits all prospects, it hits Indians and its computer professionals the hardest. Now it becomes much much harder to get these visas. Some view the order as a repeat of what happened in 1917 when the US Congress passed a law to explicity to keep Indians from immigrating to USA. It was then called the “Hindu menace” a term used to describe all Indians then, and avoid diluting the dominant white race of USA.

USA seems to have suddenly got concerned about tensions and unresolved issues between India and Pakistan, and now wants to jump in and try to negotiate. India promptly snubbed USA as it said it has no role in the bilateral issues and ties between the two countries. What USA has to keep in mind in that whatever issue it has “meddled in” has only got worse with hundreds of thousands of deaths and billions of dollars of destruction. Recent example include the situation in Afghanistan, Iraq, Libya, Syria, Ukraine, most of South America and on and on. Indians would rightly agree that the only role for USA is to STOP SUPPLYING WEAPONS TO Pakistan and get them to STOP SUPPORTING TERRORISM over the past decades! What is so hard about that – USA does not even need India’s support!

Last few days and weeks has seen a growing number of “reported” attacks on Indians in the USA unlike never before. A young and married Hyderabad origin computer developed was shot dead in a Kansas City bar in public view, while his good friend was shot but later hospitalized and survived. A long-time settled Gujarati businessman was shot dead soon after he closed his shop on Friday night in South Carolina, and then a Sardarji was shot in the Seattle area and asked to leave their country (USA) and go home. Per informal rumors, the community is talking of unusual questions being asked at shops about legal status, etc. Are these isolated instances or something more scary? Indians collectively are one of the most educated and well to do communities.

As if India does not know how to handle its internal issues, USA has raised concern about the rising intolerance and violence in India and about such things as cow protection groups and vigilante, and welfare of dalits, etc. USA has enough problems, such as one in three African-Americans (or Blacks) have seen jail sentences, the vast majority of those in jails are blacks and immigrants, there is growing gun violence, social problems and on and on. May be they should save their energies for their own problems.

Subramanian Swamy, a former Union Minister, MP and nationalist has leveled serious charges against Raghuram Rajan, the UPA appointed RBI Governor. A few ones are: 1) not mentally fully Indian, 2) because of his US Green Card and other reasons, his first loyalty is to USA and not India, 3) he has kept high interest rates which has crippled small and medium industrial sector, 4) he is sending confidential and sensitive information about India’s national security to people worldwide using a private email server, 5) has criticized the India government on multiple occasions in world forums, and 6) there are allegations that he has not supported government initiatives such as Mudra Bank, abiding by our constitution, and other things. THESE ARE SERIOUS SERIOUS CHARGES. Some of these are facts and true. So Rajan needs to explain his actions, but more importantly India has to decide if he is the best candidate or someone else. Our vote is against him continuing.

India has received pledges for nearly Rs. 15 Lakh crore (or US $222 billion) of investment pledges for “Make in India” so far already. PM’s Make in India initiative is to simply transform India into the leading “global manufacturing hub,” while creating jobs for the youth. The global chatter is that foreign direct investment into India is likely to overtake both USA and China, and is far ahead of the BRICS countries. Why this push? we have so many youth now, and by mid-century, India’s workforce will exceed 100 crores – so leaders have to figure out how to keep them all employed.

Indian pressure on USA for sometime might have yielded some results, as news reports mention that US Congress has put on hold the sale of F-16 fighter jets to Pakistan. India which has been on the receiving end of terrorist attacks by Pakistan sponsored terrorist has quietly been applying pressure on the US to get Pakistan to take action against terror groups. In what could be really bad joke, the stated reason for the sale to Pakistan of the F-16 to allow to provide humanitarian aid, when this aircraft’s primary purpose is attack and combat action.

USA has been deplaning, deporting and sending back students and business visitors who were issued valid visas with proper papers. The External Affairs Ministry has strongly emphasized to US authorities to honour the visas issued Indian Consulates to travel for education and business. It seemed like this was only concerning two universities in Silicon Valley, California, but now the deportations have grown to include many other cases. Students are being asked to give proof of their study plans, housing, financial support, health care arrangements and other things. Going by experience, students can only have some of the documentation before starting, while others would be sorted out on reaching the destination.
